Food insecurity in South Sudan has reached the most extreme levels since independence in 2011. Pockets of famine have been declared in parts of the former Unity State, in Leer and Mayendit counties. There is a high likelihood that famine could also occur in Koch County.
Famine conditions are affecting about 100,000 people who have received limited humanitarian assistance for months – if not years – because of recurrent fighting and other obstacles to access for relief organizations in Leer, Mayendit and Koch counties.
WFP requires US$ 205 million to provide food and nutrition assistance until the end of July. This includes resources needed to buy, transport and pre-position food items in areas which will become inaccessible in the rainy season when roads become impassable.
