RIBBON MINISTRIES - CHINA
Ribbon Ministries is widely recognized by the Chinese government for its service to people with HIV/AIDS. It is the only non-governmental organization in China approved to serve the HIV community. Amazing, because Ribbon is a faith-based organization in a communist country.
According to official reports, the number of people with HIV/AIDS in China is approximately 780,000. While most believe this estimate to be far too low, no one knows for sure the accurate infection rate. One of the drivers of HIV/AIDS is the massive amount of migrant labour. People come to the city to work and contract AIDS there while away from their family. AIDS still carries great stigma in the honour and shame culture of China. So people resist testing. This only increased the problem as the HIV virus gets spread back in the rural communities when workers return home.
Ribbon is having an incredible impact. They have more than 400 volunteers working on university campuses and in high infection areas. They test and provide counseling to over 3,100 people a year and care for hundreds of patients. And they provide holistic care serving the spiritual and physical needs of HIV+ people.
