Child Soldier Prevention Through Education in Sierra Leone

The Dallaire Initiative believes that preventing the use and recruitment of child soldiers is not the sole responsibility of one group or sector, but of the entire society.  Everyone must be engaged to ensure that the use of children as weapons is made “unthinkable”.

Since 2013, the Dallaire Initiative has worked with local community partners and international experts to develop, produce and distribute new education resources that specifically target children and youth who are at risk for recruitment, as well as community educators that interact with these children.  These resources provide information about how children are targeted and used by armed group, develop skills that are relevant to increasing protection and prevent harm to children in conflict situations, highlight the realities that children face within armed groups, and illustrate the stigma they face when trying to reintegrate into society.

The Dallaire Initiative develops education resources by involving children, educators, former child soldiers and community members directly to understand their needs and reflect their circumstances.  Recent examples of education resources created by the Dallaire Initiative include Teacher's Activity Packs and Teacher’s Guidance Notes to accompany the Activity Pack, stories and comic books.
