Vive la Educacion
Strengthening the Quality of and Access to Education
For children growing up in Colombia, violence and conflict is familiar, as until 2016 Colombia was dealing with a 50-year long civil war. For communities living along the Pacific coast of Colombia, they are often isolated from services like schools. And, if they can access them, the curriculum often does not reflect the culture and realities for these communities, which are largely made of Indigenous and Afro-Colombian peoples. This leads to high dropout rates.
Vive La Educacion aims to get these vulnerable children back into the education system. It surveys local communities to identify the challenges faced in accessing education, and then provides multiple options for accessing learning opportunities, either through typical schooling or a flexible program geared at students who are also parents and/or working. Teachers, Principles, and school administrators are also given training on how to change curriculum, and are supported as they create a school improvement plan, which receives input from the local community.
The result is an increase in both education access and the quality of education offered. Dropout rates reduce, and children feel more comfortable in their classrooms. Access and quality equal peace and prosperity, both of which benefit children and their families greatly.
